The bandh called by the BJP paralysed the town. The bandh was called to demand withdrawal of cases against former Madhya Pradesh chief minister Uma Bharti, who surrendered before a court on Wednesday.

More than 3,000 policemen being posted in sensitive areas. Despite several buses beingstoned, the bandh passed off peacefully, with shops, hotels and other business establishments and educational institutions remaining closed.

The former leader of the Opposition in the Karnataka Assembly, Jagdish Shettigar, however, said that the party would continue their stir till the cases against Ms Bharti were withdrawn.

Karnataka CM N Dharam Singh accused the BJP on Thursday of politicising the criminal case against Ms Bharti by linking it with the national flag.
