The Centre proposes to amend the Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority (Apeda) Act to thwart attempts being made by foreign companies to obtain intellectual property rights for Basmati rice by filing applications for registration of trademarks and grant of patents, says a release from the Rajya Sabha Secretariat.

The move is aimed at providing a mechanism to enable Apeda to undertake export promotion and development of certain products, in addition to collecting a fee on exports. The fee thus collected will be credited to a special fund to finance export promotion and development of various farm products. It is proposed to validate retrospectively the fee collected by the nodal farm development authority so far in connection with Basmati exports.
