Hike In Water Tariff Too

It is a double whammy for Kerala in user charges. Close on the heels of a potential power tariff hike threat, water tariff is also likely to go up. However, unlike the hike in power tariff, which is set to hit the common man directly, the increase in water tariff will be targetted mainly at industrial and commercial consumers, Kerala irrigation minister T N Jacob has hinted at.

The minister's rethink is contrary to the Cabinet decision last fortnight on the reaction to Aide Memoire on the Rs 1600-crore urban development loan from the Asian Development Bank (ADB). The state government's reply had categorically ruled out the proposal to hike tariff rates of drinking water. Announcement on sparing the domestic consumer of water came later. The feeler to public psyche on hiking rates of industrial and commerical water users is yet to create any ripples.
