As the government proceeds to implement the value-added tax (VAT) regime from April 1, High Court Chief Justice BC Patel on Sunday asked the legal fraternity to assure the traders and common man that they stand to benefit at the earliest from the new tax system.

Referring to Haryana, where revenue rose after implementation of VAT, he said the regime has already been examined in another state. Now the lawyers should assure their clients that they will benefit at the earliest.

Inaugurating a seminar on VAT and its implications organised by the sales tax bar association (STBA) here, he said the new idea should be welcomed.
