Hidesign diversifies into hospitality business

The Pondicherry-based Hidesign group known for its leather garments, handbags, suitcases and accessories has diversified into hospitality business by setting up boutique hotels. The company is now looking at setting up more hotel projects in the southern cities.

Hidesign produces leather products that embody best in design and quality has since forayed into boutique hotels with two properties in Pondicherry - the newly opened Le Dupleix, a nine-room heritage designer hotel and Hidesign Promenade with 33 rooms.

Now looking at the overwhelming response at the two hotels in Pondicherry, Kunal Sachdev, CEO of Hidesign, says We are now planning to expand our hotel business and are initially looking for at acquiring property in Chennai, Kochi, Bangalore and Hyderabad.

The Le Dupleix hotel is named after famous French Governor of Pondicherry Marquis Joseph Francois Dupleix, is situated in the heart of old White French quarter of Pondicherry at 5 Rue de la Caserne. Le Dupleix is in a villa built in the 18th century as the residence of Mayor of Pondicherry.

In Chennai, Hidesign officials are in talks with real estate developers for property near Chennai IT corridor to set up a 30-bed boutique hotel. We will invest about Rs 10 crore for the hotel, says Mr Sachdev.

Similarly, at Kochi, Hidesign is in talks for a heritage property at the Jew Town in Kochi. Property deals are a big issue and once its comes through, the company plans to develop the existing 10,000 sq ft property into a hotel similar to the existing one at Pondicherry.

The company has two tanneries near Chennai and manufacturing facilities in Pondicherry and serves customers demand through retail and distribution partners in every major market across the world and by putting up a series of exclusive boutiques across India.
