Handloom units in Tamil Nadu are once again facing severe crisis due to steep hike in the price of yarn following unregulated export of yarn required for the industry in the last one month. According to secretary of the Sellur Handloom Manufacturers Association M Bala Subramanian, the central and state governments would have to open gruel centres once again if they did not intervene and arrange for supply of yarn for the powerloom and handloom sectors. He said the situation was already bad with many weavers in the verge of losing their jobs, and the handloom and powerloom units were running in loss.

In a memorandum to the Union minister of state for handloom and textiles, he recalled the assurance given by the Union government.
