Ash a.k.a. Aishwarya Rai is said to have visited this salon. Other regular visitors include industrialist Anil Nanda and Ritu Nanda, entrepreneur Navin Ansal, television actress and former Miss India Gul Panag, model Jas Arora, novelist Arundhati Roy, fashion designers Ritu Beri, Ritu Kumar and Rina Dhaka, lawyer Kapil Sibal and heart specialist Naresh Trehan. Indeed, the Jacques Dessange salon in New Delhis New Friends Colony has a client list that boasts the whos who from the world of business, media, literature, fashion and television.

Entrepreneur and painter Satish Gujrals son-in-law Navin Ansal who is a partner at Paradox One situated in New Delhis fashion bistro 1 MG Road, is a Jacques Dessange regular. The salon satisfies my idea of a stylish and sophisticated hair cut, he reasons. Fashion designer Ritu Kumar, another Jacques Dessange regular also echoes similar sentiments. All the hair dressers and the hair stylists know their job and the salon is of international standards. Moreover, this is the best place to go in for special treatments and proper haircuts and styling, gushes Ms Kumar.

This Parisian salon started its operations way back in 1956 in the Champs Elysees roundabout in Paris. Over the years, Jacques Dessange has been the official hairstylist to Hollywood stars such as Catherine Zeta-Jones, Sharon Stone and Nicole Kidman and there are 700 Jacques Dessange salons in 38 countries across the globe. The chain employs 6,500 people worldwide.

In India, there are two Jacques Dessange salonsone in New Friends Colony, New Delhi and the other at Taj Mahal Hotel in Mumbai.

Lifestyle store Ravissant is the exclusive master franchisee for Jacques Dessange in India. The salon in the Capital is spread over an area of 4,000 square feet and boasts of a client list of 1,600 people that include the creme de la creme of Delhis society.

Ravi Chawla of Ravissant says that at Jacques Dessange the goal is to treat every customer like a star! This will be our differentiator, this sentiment that will set us apart. Its our endeavour to transcend hair and beauty care and create a luxurious indulgence for all senses, he adds.

The team from Paris at the salon consists of Charly Sellari and Marion Hale. Mr Sellari is the styling manager at the New Delhi salon and has been heading the salon ever since its inception two years back. He has been associated with Jacques Dessange for over 20 years now and has worked with international style icons such as Jerry Hall and French actress Catherine Deneuve. Marion Hale is the beauty manager at the salon and has worked with Jacques Dessange in Paris for six years. Her last assignment was at Jacques Dessange, Kuwait where Sheik Reem Al Sabah was one of her clients.

For Mr Sellari the wish of his customer is of paramount importance when he goes in for their hair styling or cutting. Beauty services at the salon includes facials, body massages, manicure, pedicure and make-up. A full touch up on ten nails will put you back by Rs 1,000. A sun care manicure comes for a whopping Rs 400 whiles brides will have to dish out Rs 7,000 for a complete bridal make-up.

On the other hand, if you want to go in for stress reliving massages then try the energy treatment massage (Rs 2,000) or the Ozone care stress treatment also priced at Rs 2,000.

A french hair cut and styling for men costs Rs 650 while a french cut for women is priced between Rs 1,100 and Rs 1,400. A perm would put you back by Rs 2,000, while a light and large highlight would cost Rs 3,000.

So is it French connection that is drawing the chatterati to Jacques Dessange Its nothing to do with French or Italian for that matter. You dont have to do much explaining. A little chat with Charly at the beginning is enough and he is very consistent in his approach. He satisfies my idea of a stylish and sophisticated hair cut, clarifies Mr Ansal.

But there are a few downsides too. Mr Ansal feels that the salon should try and get a few more hairdressers. A few more trained people would definitely liven up the place. I would also like better music, he adds.

Ravissant on its part plans to open a Jacques Dessange Institute of Hair Styling and Beauty by the end of 2003 in India. Another Jacques Dessange Salon should be operational in Greater Kailash, New Delhi by the end of this year. The company is planning to open a salon in Chennai, Bangalore and Punjab within the next one year.
