Gujarat govt to launch website for Vat dealers

After several hiccups, the Gujarat government is finally going ahead with implementation of value added tax (Vat) from April 1.

For simple operations, the state is launching a Dealer Accounting Software (DAS) tool based website ( for Vat dealers.

The software would be available as a free-ware and can be downloaded by any registered dealers in order to maintain their business records and filing of Vat returns.

It will help dealers prepare sales invoice, stock register and sales purchase register on their own. Dealers registered with central sales tax (CST), and having a tax identification number (TIN) can use this application.

Briefing mediapersons state finance minister Saurabh Patel informed that Vat would eliminate double taxation of present system, reduce tax rates on many goods, and would put greater emphasis on self-assessment by dealers. Vat is beneficial to Gujarat particularly as it is a manufacturing state, he said.

Nearly three lakh dealers need to register themselves for the Vat structure, which provides enough transparency to the commercial tax department to operate further, the minister said.

The notifications related to few goods to be affected by Vat have also been announced. Further, the state government has decided to charge Vat of 4% on agricultural inputs, kirana , spices and packing materials, while keeping eatables and handicrafts articles tax free.
