GMR, Lanco have filed proposal for the imported coal based 1,600-mw power project in Maharashtra. The project entails an investment of over Rs 6,400 crore. Reliance Power, Tata Power, Essar and Jindal were also other qualifed bidders though they withdrew from filing RFP.

The state-run Maharashtra State Power Generation Company (MahaGenco), which is the nodal agency for the development of proposed project at Dhopawe in the coastal Ratnagiri district, hopes to open the RFP very soon. This is one of the projects being planned in the coastal Ratnagiri district. Projects with total generation capacity of over 25,000 mw are being proposed in Ratnagiri district. However, political parties, mango and cashenut growers have been opposing these projects on the grounds that they will damage their produce and environment in general. The power starved Maharashtra will be able to draw 80% of the power produced from the proposed project while the project developer will have a freedom to sell the balance 20% to any other buyer/buyers within or outside the state.
