Gifts Galore This Festive Season

Right from Barista Coffee to lifestyle store Yamini, all retailers are gearing up to cash in on the festive mood on the occasion of the Christmas and New Year.

Yamini looks every inch the place to shop at, particularly when one sees the table mats and napkins in festive colours and designs. Even the snowflakes are taken care of! Tree decorations come for Rs 50, while a set of star, bell and bauble costs Rs 125. The wine bags start at Rs 100 and the stockings cost Rs 250.

A lifestyle store in New Delhi, Villa Deste, is concentrating its attention on glass. Apart from attractive candle-holders and floating candle bowls, it has special bowls and vases with Swarovski work done in blue, maroon and clear glass. These cost between Rs 4,800 and Rs 6,000. Some of them are decorated with gold leaves studded with crystal, which sounds like ideal party decor. However, the stores piece de resistance is a Rs 28,000 Italian orchid tube flower vase.

Villa Deste has a classier version of the bunch of grapes we see at most curio stores. It is done in Murano glass and is priced at Rs 7,800. The item is available in a range of colours like red, blue, orange and gold. Murano also brings a pair of red candle stands at an easy Rs 25,000!

The candles available at the store are shaped like books and rose flower beds, and beautified with crystal, bamboo or cinnamon sticks, dry flowers and even coffee beans. One can buy them for Rs 190 to Rs 2,000. Villa Destes flower arrangements for tables come from Rs 7,000 to Rs 10,000.

Still, buyers looking for routine Christmas decorations can visit the place as it offers a variety of items from Rs 85 to Rs 900. At the lower end are decorative ribbons and door garlands, which could even be as inexpensive as Rs 100.

Meanwhile, lifestyle store Westside, in Mumbai, is running a special Christmas festival until December 29. The products range from party outfits to gifts and objects of daily use. Westsides party gear includes hot glazed hipsters, glitzy tops and short dresses. These are all done in the colours of the seasonblack, red and white, with a tinge of silver here and there. And in case you didnt know that the 70s look is back in fashion, the store has dresses and skirts with laces and ruffles. Of course, the all time favourite animal prints and low waist trousers are also available in this store.

An interesting range of Talk About Love coffee mugs, glasses, breakfast sets, stationery and photo frames has been created at Westside this time. It vies for attention with the bold floral print frames, mugs and pen stands that were popular in the 70s.

Every purchase over Rs 2,500 earns the buyer a wrist watch, while those who spend over Rs 1,000 stand to win a trip for two to Singapore. While that should interest serious shoppers, the children will be kept busy by the in-house Santa Claus and a magic show. They can get their hair braided or their palms read or join Westsides choir in its Christmas carols.

A no frills offer comes from Christina, a silk and leather boutique which has outlets in New Delhi and Pune besides Mumbai. The store that specialises in silk and leather recently opened its second brand shop at Juhu in Mumbai. To coincide with this, it launched a new 2003 collection of cane handbags with beaded and bamboo handles. These are made in colours like lime green, pink, blue, silver and goldideal accessories for party wear. While these handbags cost Rs 1,050 to Rs 1,250, Christina also has pashmina stoles and shawls priced between Rs 900 and Rs 2,950.

However, silk and leather remain its forte. Buyers can choose from handbags and wallets, either in block prints or beaded. These cost anywhere from Rs 300 to Rs 700 for the wallets, and Rs 725 to Rs 1,750 for the handbags. Besides, Christina has jewellery boxes, cellphone covers, stationery holders and vanity bags.

Another section of the store has Indo-Western outfits and silk saris for women. The saris are priced from Rs 2,000 to Rs 7,500, while the cotton and silk Indo-Westerns range from Rs 2,000 to Rs 5,500. Mens shirts are in stock as are accessories like ties and wallets. The shirts are done in silk or linen, for which you pay from Rs 750 to Rs 1,550.

With product manufacturers going all the way, how far behind can services be! Cheryls Cosmetics in Mumbai, which claims to pioneer new generation skin and hair treatment in India, is aiming its new enzyme treatment at the party crowd. Oscar Pereira, who is a cosmetologist and director of Cheryls Cosmetics, says they make your day with their special enzymes that cleanse and revive dull skin. We have a range of 70 products and 20 treatments that are specially designed to suit Indian skin and hair, he informs us.

The Central Cottage Industries has an array of candles, bells, balls, stars perfumes and cuddly Santa toys for the festive season. You could also choose from an exquisite collection of wall hangings like a little Christmas tree made out of Kashmiri velvet with zari and beadwork done on it, or you could even buy little gift boxes made of papier mache.

Shopperss Stop on the other hand has launched the India Shopping Festival, which will be on from December 13, 2002 to January 26, 2003, across nine stores in the country.

Shoppers can expect a lot of entertainment and hope to win exciting prizes during this period. The gifts are sponsored by companies like Lakme, Gili and Mahindra Scorpio. Whats more, any purchase over and above Rs 1,500 would entitle the customer to hourly, daily, weekly and even bumper prizes. Luxor Writing Instruments Pvt Ltd has introduced some gift packs for the festive season. These gift packs come with Parker pens and accessories like watches, photo frames and leather card holders.

Manna, a gift store based in Gurgaon, offers an amazing array of gifts for Christmas. These include items in silver, wood and glass. The items are priced between Rs 125 and Rs 8,000.

The Next Shop located in Greater Kailash Part-1, New Delhi, has a variety of of gifts for the festive season. You can pick up hand painted cards on glass (Rs 75 and Rs 110), a set of coasters (Rs 150 each) or floral trays (Rs 600 and Rs 1,550). To light up the dark winter evenings, you can choose from an incredible array of candlesincluding a range in kundan, priced between Rs 220 and Rs 485. Then there are zardozi trays, coasters and photo frames on brocade. The store also houses flower vases that are priced between Rs 250 and Rs 1,500.

The Next Shop also has some hand knotted jewellery made out of thread and semi-precious stones. The anklets are priced at Rs 40. As you raise a toast to the season, this one-stop shop shares your bonhomie with Magpie stainless steel bar sets and ice boxes (Rs 995 and Rs 2,000). You can also pick up chimes (Rs 250 and Rs 550).
