Come spring and the policedogs in Dusseldorf, popularly known as the fashion capital of Germany, will no longer have to go barefooted on patrol they will all sport blue plastic-fibre shoes while on duty.

All 20 of our police dogs are being trained to walk in these shoes. Im not sure they like it, but theyll have to get used to it, Andre Hartwich, a Spokesman for the police, said.

The shoes come in sizes small, medium and large and have been ordered in blue to match the officers uniforms.

The unusual footwear is not a fashion statement, but rather a necessity due to the high rate of paw injuries sustained by the canines while on duty.

The dogs often step on broken beer bottles, especially in Alte Stadt (the old town), which is famous for its pubs. Even the street cleaning doesnt manage to remove all the glass pieces from between the cobblestones, he said.
