GDA Technologies Ltd, the Indian arm of the US-based electronics design firm GDA Technologies Inc, plans to rapidly scale up its design centre in Chennai to house 250 professionals in two years from 60 employees currently. The ramp-up will entail a significant investment, said company president AG Karunakaran.

The operations in Chennai will include IC design services, system and design services and IP solution group. The centre will help the company grow in revenue, staff and services offered. India is increasingly becoming popular location for design services. The centre will service the Indian market and other global locations. It will be a one-stop product design centre to realise a product from the concept stage, he explained.

GDA Inc was set up in 1996 by a group of Indian professionals and is headquartered in San Jose. The company has not availed of any venture funding and presently has a topline of $11 million (Rs 51 crore). It expects to touch $50 million (Rs 230 crore) revenue mark in the next three years.

The firm is open to VC funding at reasonable valuations, which will help accelerate growth and global presence. We have been able to grow through internal accruals as it is a high margin business, he noted.

Presence in India makes it easier to avail VC funding. Also, global majors are increasingly setting up their design centres in India.

Industry leaders such as Texas Instruments, Motorola, Intel etc have design centre in India while Indian firms such as Wipro, HCL Tech are very active in the space, industry experts said.
