State-owned GAIL India Ltd said on Monday that it plans to tap the Rs 80,000 crore telecom market by acquiring the new NLDO licence for entering the national long distance telephony segment.

The company will be launching project Triveni, where it has joined hands with Powergrid and Railtel to create the second biggest optic fibre network with a reach of 60,000 km across the length and width of the country, it informed the Bombay Stock Exchange. This network would be much sought after by the new National Long Distance Operations (NLDO) players, as laying of optic fibre by them would be cost prohibitive, it said.
