Four Star Treatment

Union finance minister Jaswant Singh has decided to return from Davos, where he is participating in the World Economic Forum, a day ahead of schedule.

Was it that he could not stand the cold or wanted to witness the Republic Day parade or was it just that he found himself booked into a four-star hotel while the Andhra Pradesh government managed to get five-star accommodation for chief minister Chandrababu Naidu No one in North Block knows!

Budget For Waste
When former finance secretary K P Geethakrishnan took charge as the chairman of the Expenditure Commission, he was forewarned by fellow IAS retiree GV Ramakrishna, former Sebi boss and ex-chairman Disinvestment Commission, about the likely fate of his new committees report.

The first recommendation you must make GVR told KPG, is for the government to budget for the purchase of large waste paper baskets each time they appoint a commission so that they have space to dump the reports in when they are presented!

Virar Jinx
Does Virar, a suburb in North Mumbai, have anything to do with chief ministers of Maharashtra Yes, a lot, says a letter writer from Virar in our sister publication, Loksatta.

On the 12th of this month, Vilasrao Deshmukh visited Virar for a public function and lost his chief ministership within a week. Till this visit, his political foes, despite their hectic efforts, could not succeed in ousting him.

The late Vasantrao Naik, chief minister of the state for 12 long years, had to go within a week of his visit to Virar in 1974. Another chief minister, the late Vasantdada Patil, too, had to step down from the post after his visit to the place.

A warning for future chief ministers of Maharashtra: steer clear of Virar, the jinxed place, if you wish to continue in office
