November 1, 1999: Mr Jacques Nasser, the then CEO of Ford Motor Company, rolls out the first Ikona product designed and built specifically for the Indian market. In the press conference that followed the event Mr Nasser said Fords Indian operations had a long way to go to become an export hub for the global car maker.

November 1, 2002: Ford India sells 1,06,576 units. The more interesting aspect is that the number of Ikons exported by far exceeded that sold in its destined marketIndia. Exports to South Africa, Mexico and Brazil accounted for 58,941 units while 47,635 units were sold in India.

To commemorate the success of Ikon in the overseas market, Ford India, on the ocassion of the third anniversary of the product launch, has identified josh hai tho duniya hai as the theme for celebration. Those buying Ikon from now till the end of this year would be chosen through a lucky draw for a trip to South Africa, Brazil and Mexicomarkets where Ikon is currently sold abroad.

Every year we have opted for a particular theme that reflects the performance of the product. This year it is exports said Ford India vice-president (external affairs) Vinay Piparsania.

The first anniversary celebration of Ikon saw a performance by noted singer Shankar Mahadevan. For the second year the company offered free insurance and a CD player. Usually November-December is a period where one gets to see a lot of discounting in the market to clear stocks. But we at Ford India prefer to add value to the customers he claimed.
