Whosoever becomes the next president of Pakistan, the critical decisions awaiting him are: (1) deal decisively with Taliban terrorism; (2) revitalise the economy, boost exchange rate and reduce dependence on the US; (3) convince citizens credibly that the government is working for their benefit and not embroiled in infightings; (4) emancipate women and eradicate child labour; and (5) maintain peace and foster trade with India. Leaders of the ruling coalition, which just fell apart, should remember that the army has no inhibition to leave the barracks if civilian rule falters.
