* Economy

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on Monday said the path was well laid out for UPA-II as it sought to strengthen its pro-poor policies and focus on rapid economic expansion, with a medium-term GDP growth target of 10% a year. Addressing a press conference here to mark the first anniversary of the Congress-led governments second term, Singh asserted that the targeted growth rate was achievable, given our savings and investment rates.

* Politics

Revising its stand on the issue of caste census, the Union home ministry has said that the best time to go for a caste based headcountif there is a decision to that effectwould be after tabulation of census figures and during the biometric capture phase when photographs, fingerprints and iris mapping of citizens for the National Population Register is done.

* Markets

Smart recovery by Asian bourses along with some short covering ahead of the expiry of May futures helped benchmark indices bounce back on Wednesday after a loss of more than 2.5% on Tuesday.

The 30-share Sensex of the BSE added 365 points (2.28%) to close the day at 16,387.84. The broader Nifty of the NSE rose 2.3% to end the day at 4,917.40.
