Civil society organisations (CSOs), trade unionists and farmers bodies could finally get the Indian farmer leader Sunil Mishra released from detention in Hong Kong.

Mr Mishra, popularly called Sunilam, is a leader of Madhya Pradesh Kisan Sangarsh Samiti and an active member of Indian coordination committee of farmers movement. He is also a Madhya Pradesh MLA.

Sunilam was arrested on December 17 by the Hong Kong police from the Wan Chai area when several Indian farmers, trade unionists and NGOs joined their Korean, Thai and Indonesian counterparts in a peaceful protest march. According to reports received from Hong Kong, the protest march turned violent as around 2,000 policemen blocked the path of the demonstrators who were on their way to deliver a message to delegates attending the WTO ministerial. The police made several arrests and Sunilam was one of them.
