The inaugural e-auction fetched the Delhi government a total of Rs 72.4 lakh with a total of 29 bids. The Transport department had hoped to earn at least Rs 1 crore, after 127 people had applied for the online auction.
Though the bidding took place for around 140 VIP numbers that had been classified into four categories, officials said most of the bidding was for a few favourite numbers.
The reserve price for the auction ranged from Rs 1 lakh to Rs 5 lakh. But the bidding dominated only certain numbers. For instance, the number 0001 had six car owners pursuing it at a point. Others received no interest, an official said. He said the registration number 0001, with a minimum reserve price of Rs 5 lakh, was sold for Rs 12.5 lakh. This will motivate people to not try and pull strings by approaching this politician or that. Apart from 0001, which went for Rs 12.5 lakh, registration number 0009 was sold for Rs 8.25 lakh and 0786 went for Rs 2.1 lakh, he said.
