Garment exporters have asked the commerce ministry to accept the European Union (EU) proposal of increasing quota limits in the European market against the condition that India should bind its tariffs at 20 per cent.

In a letter to commerce and industry minister Arun Jaitley, the Apparel Export Promotion Council chairman A Sakthivel said that acceptance of the EU offer would give exporters a headstart in the EU market. Exports may increase by around Rs 4,000 crore only due to this memorandum of understanding, he said in the letter.

He added that bringing specific duties in line with the EU demand would not be a problem since these duties were already very high. Mr Sakthivel said the council members were of the view that government should go ahead with the proposal of the EU .
