Whats in a name

A TV advertisement released by the income-tax department reminding taxpayers about the last date for payment of advance tax has run into rough weather. The reason being a fictional episode of a person being raided by the I-T department and being addressed as Guptaji, which triggered protests that the relevant community was being branded as being dishonest. The I-T departments defence is that there was nothing in the ad to suggest that the conduct of the fictional character was reflective of the conduct of any specific community in general and that the use of the name in the ad was just by chance. However, considering the perceptional sensitivity of the issue, it has decided not to use surnames for fictional characters in its media campaigns.
