Nearly 13 Congress MPs were absent from voting on a Bill granting constitutional status to the Lokpal, leading to the defeat of the Bill in the Lok Sabha. Among those absent was young MP Hamdullah Sayeed, son of former minister, the late PM Sayeed. To the astonishment of many Congress MPs, the young MP was seen walking around and attending the debate during the day only to disappear during the evenings voting. When asked about his non-appearance, Sayeed muttered something about not feeling well and returning home. Many others felt that he was under the erroneous impression that the Bills would be passed by voice vote.
Long, cold lonely winter
There was remarkably low frequency of walkouts during the debate on Lokpal which was stormy to say the least. The credit for that is being laid at the door of Delhis freezing temperatures rather than any forbearance on the part of the netas. Now if only absconding ruling party MPs preferred to stay snug inside the heated Lok Sabha, they wouldnt be out in the cold as far as their party is concerned.
