Home minister

A prominent Cabinet minister from a southern UPA partner reportedly spends almost all his time in his home state. He has apparently met his officials just once since taking charge. Much to the bemusement of officials, he prefers not to speak in either English or Hindi, insisting on his mother tongue. Quite clearly, he hasnt grown into the Centres ways.

Absentee hotels

Inspired by the governments directive to all government employees to fly Air India, state-controlled ITDCwhich controls 19 hotel properties in the countryis planning to write to the Centre for a similar directive. Perhaps it slipped the minds of top ITDC officials, but ITDC doesnt have hotels in major business hubs like Mumbai and Bangalore and is conspicuously absent even in leisure destinations like Agra and Goa.

BPL cars

The Haryana government announced a low-cost housing scheme last week, which was immediately lapped up by real estate developers who read the fine print: parking space will be provided with all flats.

Behind time

Ben Bernanke got renominated as chairman of the US Fed more than four months before his first term was to end. Clearly, RBI isnt accorded similar priority. Rakesh Mohans successor as DG is yet to be appointed, though he quit months ago. Shyamala Gopinath is about to retire as DG and there is no word on her replacement. Earlier, KC Chakraborty was appointed DG with a lag after his predecessor retired. One wonders what is causing all the delay in the filling up of key posts in the midst of a severe slowdown.
