Easier Onion Exports Proposed

The government has decided to liberalise export of onions and remove it from the restrictive list under the Essential Commodities Act.

The Union agriculture ministry has noted that as onion exports are limited by a fixed quota and stocking limits are regulated under the Essential Commodities Act, farmers are not getting fair returns. This year there are reports of Raja-sthan and Maharashtra farmers going for distress sales of this perishable commodity.

Therefore, the ministry has proposed liberalising the export of this commodity so that farmers can get a better price aligned to global trends.
