The beleagured Maharashtra government has finally acted against Reliance Energy Ltd (REL) for its failure to restore power in Mumbai suburbs and served notice through its revenue department for disrupting public order by its act of commission and ommission. The notice has been served under the Criminal Procedure Code.

The Maharashtra Electricity Regulatory Commission (MERC) has also slapped a notice on REL under the provisions of the Electricity Act 2003, Supply Code and Standard of Performance Regulation on similar grounds.

REL sources confirmed that it has received both notices and will submit its position to the respective agencies. Sources admitted that of the 4,000 transformers, nearly 123 transformers have been out of order while another 100 transformers have not been under operation due to safety reasons.

The revenue department, through the Mumbai suburban collector, has issued notice to REL asking it why the company should not be held responsible for the present sad state of affairs which has arisen due to its poor show in restoration of power. The state chief secretary, R Prem Kumar, confirmed that such a notice has been issued to REL.
