Warning against succumbing to the Bush administrations game of trying to entice it into joining the US strategic military alliance, CPI-M has told the UPA government to follow an independent foreign policy and forge closer ties with all major countries. Moreover, they said that an independent policy would be necessary to ensure the success of the Iran-Pakistan-India gas pipeline project.

In a statement, the CPI-M politbureau said that the US offer to sell F-16 and F-18 fighter planes to India was a strategy to draw India into a strategic military relationship, just as Pakistan has been involved in one for decades.

The fuelling of the arms race between India and Pakistan with the sale of sophisticated weaponry suits the US interests perfectly as well as providing a good market for its arms manufacturers, the statement said.

Warning the UP government to be wary of such offers as experience has shown that the US cannot be relied upon to be a dependable weapons supplier, the CPI-M said that India should reject the proposal to join the infamous National Missile Defence System as joining it would be tantanount to becoming a junior partner of the USA, adding that accepting the offer would also adversely impact India-Pakistan relations.
