Guess who is keeping the cash registers ringing for insurance companies in Gods own country The Gods themselves! The temple administration of the renowned hill shrine of Sabarimala, where the bachelor Lord Ayyappa is the presiding deity, has roped in a public sector insurance company to get a comprehensive cover for the shrine. The policy covers destruction to temple property and life and accident cover to visiting devotees. This is a sequel to the administrators of the famous Guruvayoor temple going for a similar coverage. And so, senior executives of major insurance companies are now queuing in front of temples, not for the traditional darshan, but to sell policies. Last heard, some are even planning to change their punchline to May God bless you.

Potato pie

Tata Motors could end up producing potatoes instead of cars at Singur. At least, thats what Trinamool chief Mamata Banerjee seems to expect, going by her latest protest against farmland acquisition for the small-car project. Last weekend, Mamata, who had earlier been evicted from the area when she tried to stop farmers from queuing up for acquisition payment cheques, began planting potato seeds on part of the land. However, the Tatas arent very worried. For one, state chief minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee and his commerce and industries minister, Nirupam Sen, have put their weight behind the project.

So have leaders of their party, the CPI-M, big brother in the ruling Left Front. They know that if the CM gives in to the TMCs demands now, apart from the political benefit to her, Mamata would begin calling the shots in every such decision.
