The move may also result in the consolidation of the government owned chip design and manufacturing company, Semiconductor Complex Limited (SCL) with related activities currently being carried out by different defence and space research organisations independently.
The department is also planning to work with the other ministries like ministry of human resource development (HRD) and department of science and technology to bring all the overlapping research and education work at one place.
This was indicated by the newly appointed minister of state for communication and information technology, Sanjay Paswan who has been given the charge of the department of information technology.
Mr Paswan, in an exclusive interview with eFE, said, “There is a lot of duplication of activities in what is being done by several societies of DIT and department of science and technology in the area of research and education. Similarly, many space and defence organisations like DRDO are working on chip design while similar work is being done by SCL.”
“We are ready for amalgamation, reorganisation and right sizing of the operations. I plan to discuss this issue with experts internally and then will approach Union minister Pramod Mahajan to take it up further. I will propose that either they (other ministries or departments) can take it all or they can give it to us,” said Mr Paswan.
Denying any move of a disinvestment plan for SCL, Mr Paswan said that the government would like to revive the company. “The revival of the company would need huge investment as SCL is far behind global standards in its capabilities. The government can not shell out so much money for revival of the company but if all related work is brought together, it can create the necessary mass for reviving SCL,” he said.
