The Department of Industrial Policy and Promotion (DIPP) will soon finalise an information technology (IT) strategy plan as part of ongoing efforts to undertake comprehensive computerisation of the operations of the patent offices in the country. Official sources said the department had prepared an IT strategy plan in consultation with the users which would be finalised soon.

Modernisation and computerisation of the patent offices is part of an ongoing scheme of the Ninth plan undertaken as a strategic response to globalisation and liberalisation of the Indian economy. DIPP has already appointed C-DAC to computerise operation of the patent office on a turn-key basis, they said adding that the first phase was scheduled to be completed in the current fiscal.

Renovation of Delhi and Chennai offices has already been completed and work in Kolkata and Mumbai offices is nearing completion, they said.

Action is now being taken to set up integrated Intellectual Property offices in one building covering patents, designs and trademarks in their own buildings.
