Recognising the importance of genetically modified seeds (BT cotton) and other hybrid seeds, the standing committee of Parliament on agriculture has recommended to the government to devise a mechanism of differential minimum support price for such seeds in view of their high cost to farmers and better quality of final produce.

The committee in its recent report said since genetically modified seeds of Bt cotton and hybrid seeds of different food crops, oilseeds, pulses, vegetables have also been developed farmers. They should be given more prices for his produce from such seeds as the quality of the crop is better than that produced from traditional seeds and seed cost is also higher.

Such differential pricing would encourage farmers to grow good quality and high yielding varieties , it observed.
