Dhanwanthari Vaidyasala, a 70-year-old ayurvedic firm, is planning to expand operations beyond the country's borders. According to company partner Anup the company was in talks to start treatment centres in the Maldives and Dubai. Besides, the company which had confined its activities to Kerala also plans centres at Chennai, Bangalore, Mumbai, Ahmedabad and New Delhi. It already has a centre in Hyderabad.

The company, with a turnover of Rs 2.5 crore last fiscal, has already achieved Rs 3.5 crore this fiscal and targets Rs 5 crore by the end of next year. Plans were afoot to start a 25-bedded hospital in another six months in Kochi.

The company, based at Thodupuzha in Idukki district, has over 50 branches and 100 agencies, besides full-fledged treatment centres at Thodupuzha, Kottayam, Kannur and Hyderabad and the ones proposed at Thrissur and Kozhikode in the state.

The company entered into exports this year and medicines were being sent to Austria, Malaysia and a few countries in West Asia. This was a minimal amount, but given the trend, this would improve, Mr Anup added.

The company which had received the good manufacturing practice (GMP) had a most modern plant for the manufacture of medicines and presently was producing over 350 preparations. It was also going into special products and would soon be launching patented drugs for diabetis and arthritis for which clinical trials have been conducted over the last three years.
