American president George W Bush has named David Campbell Mulford as new ambassador to India. The post has been vacant since Robert Blackwill moved to the national security council in August as strategic adviser to Condoleezza Rice in the White House.

The US senate will now have to approve Dr Mulfords nomination, which was announced by the White House on Thursday.

At present Dr Mulford is the chairman of Credit Suisse First Boston International in London and a member of its executive board.
