Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on Friday effected a minor reshuffle of portfolios, shifting S Jaipal Reddy from information and broadcasting to urban development and Priyaranjan Dasmunshi from water resources to I&B. There were no changes in key economic ministries.

In the reshuffle, necessitated by the winter session

of Parliament beginning Wednesday, the Prime Minister has retained external affairs after stripping Natwar Singh of the portfolio following his naming in the Volcker report on irregularities in Iraqi oil deals. He has also kept the coal portfolio, which was taken from JMM leader Shibu Soren last year when he became Jharkhand chief minister.

While Mr Reddy will retain the culture portfolio, Mr Dasmunshi, chief whip of the Congress party in Lok Sabha, will also retain parliamentary affairs portfolio, which he acquired after the exit of Ghulam Nabi Azad a fortnight ago when he became the chief minister of Jammu and Kashmir. Mr Azad had also held the urban development charge. Both Mr Reddy and Mr Dasmunshi are ministers of cabinet rank.

Heavy industry & public enterprises minister Santosh Mohan Deb has been given the additional charge of water resources. Another minister of state with independent charge, Oscar Fernandes has been given the portfolios of sports and youth affairs and NRIs.
