The state-owned Central Silk Board (CSB), the apex body of the Indian silk industry, has filed a petition with the Union government to extend anti-dumping duty on silk yarn imported from China for further four years from the time of its expiry in January 2009.

Talking to FE on the sidelines of a book releasing function of the Union textile ministry, CSB chairman H Hanumanthappa said that China was exporting silk yarn to India at cheaper cost.

Based on a case filed by the CSB earlier, the Union government has imposed anti-dumping duty on silk yarns imported from China in 2002-03. The anti-dumping duty has helped the domestic silk yarn producers to fetch higher price for their produce. Later the Board has approached the Union government to extend the anti-dumping duty for another five years when it came to end in January 2008. But the government has extended for only one year till January 2009, Hanumanthappa said. Now based on the petition filed by the CSB, the committee from the central would visit the silk producing areas from the next month to have field studies to extend anti-dumping duty on silk yarn. After CSB managed to get anti-dumping duty on Chinese silk yarn in 2002-03, has increased the exorts of silk fabric to India.
