Indias first seafood park was inaugurated by minister of state for food processing industries Subodh Kant Sahay last weekend. The park has been set up to upgrade the quality of seafood pre-processing facilities to international standards.

The park has come up through a private-public partnership with equity participation from 10 Kerala exporters, the state government, ministry of commerce, Marine Products Export Development Authority (MPEDA) and grant-in-aid provided by the ministry of food processing, sources said.

The park consists of 10 individual pre-processing units for each of the individual shareholders with common facilities like water treatment, effluent disposal, power, rainwater harvesting and rest room for workers. This is the maiden effort of the commerce ministry in upgrading the pre-processing facilities of the industry according to European Union and FDA (US Food and Drug Administration) standards.

The exporters have contributed 74% of the share capital and 26% has been contributed by Kerala and the ministry of commerce.
