Making up partly for its abysmal performance in Bihar, the Congress, as a consolation, swept the bypolls in Maharashtra where Priya Dutt registered a landslide win in the Mumbai north-west parliamentary constituency and revenue minister Narayan Rane handed out an embarrassing defeat to his former party the Shiv Sena, in Malwan assembly seat.

Priya Dutt, daughter of former sports and youth affairs minister Sunil Dutt, was fielded as a Congress candidate in place of her father who passed away recently. She defeated her nearest rival by more than 170000 votes.

Mr Rane, on the other hand, won the Malwan assembly by-election by a margin of 63,000 votes.

What sweetened the victory for Rane was that the Shiv Sena candidate had to forfeit his deposit. .

The Congress, however, suffered a defeat in Kerala losing the Thiruvananthapuram parliamentary seat to the LDF.
