The Coal India Ltd(CIL) is in the process of identifying nine more virgin underground mines in a bid to increase coal production even as it plans to invite applications from global consortiums for the development of underground mines in four locations, chairman Partha S Bhattacharyya said.

We are in the process of starting the geological survey for nine virgin mines. The study report would be given to consortia wishing to develop the mines. They would have to decide whether they need further study, Bhattacharya said on the sidelines of the national colloquium on long wall mining in India organised by the Journal of Mines Metals & Fuels.

He said that CIL would, in the next two to three months, invite global bids for four identified mining areas areas in Tilaboni and Madhujor under Eastern Coalfields Ltd, Jagannath under Mahanadi Coalfields Ltd and Morpar under Western Coalfields Ltd.
