The key priorities of CII (northern region) would be improving the regions infrastructure including rural infrastructure, air, road and rail connectivity, power, telecommunication through public-private partnerships.

This was disclosed by new CII (northern zone)chairman Adesh Gupta.

Mr Gupta said the theme for CII(north), Nirman North -New Opportunities through Rural, Technological and Human Resources highlighted the thrust areas for 2006 - 07.

A common economic zone in the north, with abolition of multiple tax structures, free movement of goods and sharing of best practices across various states would create new synergies in the region, he said.

The region holds a vast market potential as it has 30% of Indias population and contributes 28% to the GDP. But it still lags behind western and southern regions in attracting corporate investment.

Well coordinated planning and development of a common agenda among the states would put the northern region on a new growth trajectory, stressed Mr Gupta.
