There is a need to put in place an integrated food law which would cover the development, standard setting, enforcement and consumer safety for the entire foodchain, CII has said.

According to the chamber, all current laws governing food quality and safety must be repealed, which must include the Prevention of Food Adulteration (PFA) Act, 1954, and PFA Rules, 1955, including other acts and orders. While CII is optimistic that the proposed bill would be tabled in the present Parliamentary session, it has advocated that the definition of food should include functional foods, dietary and nutritional foods.
