Citing threats to habitation, the Centre on Friday refused clearance to Chennai Petroleum Corporations R126-crore plan to lay a crude oil pipeline to its refinery at Manali in Tamil Nadu.

The Union environment ministry, however, advised the company to suggest an alternative route and a fresh proposal along with the Tamil Nadu government authorities which can be considered for coastal regulatory zone (CRZ) clearance.

The project was meant to connect the CPCL refinery at Manali with the Chennai port replacing the existing 30 inch crude oil pipeline with a new 42 inch pipeline.

The proposal was examined by the Expert Appraisal Committee (EAC) in its meeting held on October 17 and 18. The ministry accepted the the EAC recommendation to defer the proposal.
