Ten months after the United Progressive Alliance (UPA) came to power, no decision has yet been taken on sick PSUs. As a result, Hindustan Cables Ltd, a central PSU, continues to exist on paper even as it has ceased production activity since February 2004. As of now, it has no chairman, only one director instead of four, and has not been paying salaries to its workers since August 2004, according to a statement by the joint action committee of officers and other staff of all three Hind Cable units in West Bengal, Hyderabad and Allahabad.

The employees, who held a dharna here recently, have been demanding immediate revival of the PSU. They want immediate release of orders from BSNL and MTNL to restart plant and machinery. Also, they want a high-profile consultant to be appointed to prepare a market survey and a viability report for the proposed diversification plan.
