The performance of central public sector units (CPSUs) during 2004-05 are at par with the best of private sector companies, according to a study by Standing Conference of Public Enterprises (Scope).

The study revealed the return on investments in the CPSUs was 21.4% during the previous financial year. Out of the 225-odd CPSUs, 144 made profits and the rest were loss-making.

The study said while losses by the public enterprises stood at Rs 8,000 crore, profitable CPSUs posted an overall post-tax net of Rs 50,000 crore.
