Uttar Pradesh chief minister Mayawati on Saturday decided to hand over the Rs 35,000 crore food grain scam, which took place between March 2004 to October 2005, to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI).

Cabinet secretary Shashank Shekhar Singh told reporters that an extremely perturbed chief minister has said those guilty of diverting the food grains, which was meant for satisfying the hunger of the poor to foreign countries must be traced and should be severely punished. The report has also unearthed the involvement of highly-placed state and central government officers.

The state government had earlier constituted a special investigation team to investigate the scam. As per the primary investigation report of the SIT, it has emerged that this scam is very extensive and multi-dimensional.
