The Consortium of Indian Farmers Association (CIFA) has asked the Union government to make an early announcement of minimum support price (MSP) for paddy.

In a letter to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, CIFA secretary general P Changal Reddy said that the sowing season for Khariff paddy is fast approaching and urged the government to announce the MSP at Rs 1,800 per quintal for the year 2008-09.

Reddy said that Rs 1,800 per quintal is derived out of the formula proposed by Prof. Swaminathan, ie, cost of the production Rs 1,200 + Rs 600 .

Claiming that the international price for paddy is zooming, Reddy said it is opportune time for the country to exploit the situation by encouraging the farmers with remunerative price and necessary inputs.
