President APJ Abdul Kalam has called for developing a robust domestic market to insulate the Indian software services industry from the shocks of global calamities. Inaugurating the Bangalore IT.Com 2002, Dr Kalam said there is a need for the IT sector in the country, to break new grounds to achieve this goal. Referring to the downturn following September 11, Dr Kalam said, Our software industry should be made more robust and less fragile so that such external attacks could not not have a huge negative impact.

Dr Kalam emphasised on the crucial role played by IT in countrys development. Economic strength is driven by competitiveness which is driven by knowledge power, which in turn is powered by technology. Though it all depends on resources and investment. We have to strive harder to strengthen the nations economy, he said. To realise this vision, Dr Kalam emphasised on co-operation between the government, educational institutes and the industry.

Dr Kalam also stressed on the need to develop effective networks such as transport and river to achieve the ultimate goal of serving the population in rural areas. I will celebrate the day when IT reaches the remote corners of the country in terms of tele-medicine, tele-education, e-commerce and e-governance. Unless we add value to the IT products, economic prosperity of the country is not possible, he said.

Dr Kalam said that progress in the software sector alone will not resolve the development problems of the country.
