The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has mooted a proposal to the Maharashtra government seeking amendment to the Maharashtra Plastic Carry Bags (Manufacture and Usage) Rule 2006. The proposal is aimed at empowering the civic body to initiate action against the manufacturing units, which are into the production of plastic bags less than 50 microns. The civic body is awaiting the states clearance. The BMC has initiated move in this regard as it has failed to implement ban on plastics in Greater Mumbai.

BMC deputy municipal commissioner VK Patil confirmed this move. Patil said that as per law, the BMC has permission to fine the end users of plastic bags, including the stockists and retailers.
