BJP leaders have held several rounds of talks with Rashtriya Lok Dal (RLD) leader and Union minister Ajit Singh whose party has 14 members in the Uttar Pradesh (UP) state Assembly. The BSP has 98 MLAs and BJP 88 in the 403-member UP house.

Ajit Singh also held talks with BSP on the issue of government formation in UP and had reportedly supported the coalition on the ground that there was no other alternative in the state in the light of a fractured electoral verdict.

The current round of talks followed remarks by BSP supremo Kanshi Ram who had ruled out any post of deputy chief ministership on the ground that it would create a parallel power centre in the state but had said, a coalition government would be in place within a week.

Earlier, before the meeting at the home minister LK Advanis residence, BJP President Jana Krishnamurthy called on the Prime Minister AB Vajpayee to discuss the UP issue and to apprise him of his visit to Gujarat.
