Bharat Biotech Inter-national Ltd is working on developing a liquid vaccine for rabies for the first time in the country. The new molecule is expected to be convenient in terms of usage as opposed to the existing freeze-dried vaccine.

According to Krishna M Ella, chairman, the company has received Rs 7 crore from the Technology Development Board, ministry of science and technology and has initiated the preliminary work for the liquid vaccine. There are only a couple of Chinese companies which are working on liquid vaccines for rabies.

While the conventional vaccine is a freeze-dried and has to be mixed with water before administration, the liquid vaccine can be directly injected into the muscle. Ella said the company was still working on the cost factor.
