At a time when the Left Front government is fighting hard to set up a handful of special economic zones in the state, be it in Haldia or elsewhere, the state of industry throws up a grim picture.

There has been a pathological indifference from the small and medium units in West Bengal to avail themselves of technology upgradation scheme of the central government.

"While around 20% of small and medium enterprises in the country have taken advantage of the TUF scheme, the figure for West Bengal is at a low 5%," Romit Mutsuddi, special secretary to the state's small, medium and textile secretary, said during the inauguration of a Global Micro Small & Medium Enterprises Forum. Mutsuddi said there are about nine lakh MSMEs in the state accounting for over 90% of industrial units which take care of 45% of the total industrial production.
