Hrithik Roshan and Katrina Kaif starrer ‘Bang Bang’ box office collections have fallen short of the sizzle created by the hype surrounding the movie – product not packing enough bang for the buck, is the message emanating from the Bollywood mad public.
That this happened to ‘Bang Bang’, the movie with the greatest buzz currently playing in theatres, in the midst of a super-holiday in the form of a 5-day weekend is very much astounding and will, no doubt, send the marketing guys scurrying to find an answer, because such a thing is unheard of.
Expected to break all kinds of records at the box office, ‘Bang Bang’ has been unsuccessful in its attempt to climb the record charts, clocking in at Rs 94.13 crore in four days.
‘Bang Bang’, which released with ‘Haider’ on Thursday, has become the highest opening weekend grosser of 2014 by collecting Rs 94.13 (4 days), albeit on a long and extend weekend, beating Salman Khan’s ‘Kick’ that collected Rs 83.83 crore (3 days) and Ajay Devgn-starrer Singham Returns’ Rs 77.69 crore (3 days).
While ‘Bang Bang’ first day box office collections held out promise of better things to come – becoming Hrithik Roshan’s biggest opener – Day 2 showed that the trend was not going to continue and Day 3 and Day 4 virtually cemented that into a fact.
Here are the 4-day collections of ‘Bang Bang’:
Day 1. Rs 27.54 crore
Day 2: Rs 24.08 crore
Day 3: Rs 20.1 crore
Day 4: Rs 22.41 crore
Sunday showed an improvement, but not by much. Made on a mammoth Rs 140-crore budget, ‘Bang Bang’ is crawling its way to recover the amount spent on it. Today, Monday, is the last day of the holidays’ period and Hrithik Roshan & co will be hoping they score big – just like Salman Khan’s ‘Kick’ did on Eid day.
In fact, the film’s attempt to become the fastest to enter the Rs 100 crore club has failed and it is now in the race to equal ‘Kick’ and ‘Singham Returns’ records for the same. Both Salman Khan and Ajay Devgn-starrer managed to meet the sought after mark within 5 days.
The record is held by Aamir Khan’s ‘Dhoom 3’ (3 days), followed by Hrithik Rishan’s ‘Krrish 3’ and Shah Rukh Khan’s ‘Chennai Express’ (both in 4 days).
Though achieving Rs 100 crore target is no big deal for ‘Bang Bang’, going by current trend, the Rs 200 crore goal is looking quite difficult at the moment.
However, ‘Bang Bang’ still has time to score big as the next big Bollywood release – Shah Rukh Khan’s ‘Happy New Year’ – is three weeks away.
